Hotpoint F fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedOvenLast updated

An F followed by a number. Hotpoint publish no meaning for any of them — their instruction is to read the number down the phone, not to look it up.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Hotpoint properly.

What F means

This is the most honest page we can write about Hotpoint ovens, and it is a page about an absence. Their troubleshooting table carries one row covering the entire numeric code space: the display shows the letter F followed by a number, the cause is a software problem, and the solution is to contact the call centre and state the number following the letter F. That is the whole of it. Ten current GB manuals were checked across the range and not one contains a table mapping those numbers to faults.

Two codes are exceptions and have pages of their own here — F3E3 for the food probe and F8E8 for the steam system — but for everything else the manufacturer has decided the number is for the engineer rather than for you. Be sceptical of what you find elsewhere. Sites publishing confident meanings for Hotpoint oven F codes are not sourcing them from Hotpoint, because Hotpoint have not published them. The number is genuinely meaningful; it identifies a specific fault to someone with the service documentation. It is just not information the manufacturer has released.

What to try yourself

  1. Write the code down exactly, including every character after the F. That is the one piece of information Hotpoint actually want from you.

  2. Check whether it is F3E3 or F8E8 first. Those two are the exceptions with a published meaning and an owner fix, and both are covered on their own pages here.

  3. Set the clock if it is flashing. Hotpoint state that some models will not cook until the time of day is set, and a power cut cancels it.

  4. Call and quote the number. Do not use the factory reset in the settings menu as a way of clearing this — Hotpoint warn it deletes all your saved settings.

A factory reset is destructive and it is not a fault-clearing procedure. Hotpoint’s own wording is that all settings saved will be deleted.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Hotpoint F

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Not answerable from a code nobody has defined. A diagnostic call-out is typically £90 to £130 before parts, and having the exact number ready is the only thing that shortens it.

Common questions about Hotpoint F

I found a site listing Hotpoint oven F codes. Can I trust it?

We would not. Hotpoint publish no mapping from F numbers to faults in any current GB oven manual, so whatever that list is, it did not come from the manufacturer. Some of it may be transposed from their dishwashers or washing machines, which do have published codes and are different appliances with different code systems.

My manual has no code section at all. Is that normal?

Yes, depending on which oven you own. Hotpoint sell two entirely different documentation lineages under one badge — the 60cm built-in single ovens carry Whirlpool-authored manuals with the letter-F row, and the 89cm and 72cm double ovens carry Beko-authored manuals with no codes whatsoever. If your troubleshooting section is symptom-based with triple arrows, you have the second kind.

How long should I switch the oven off for?

None of the brands in this group publishes a figure, so we are not going to give you one. What we can tell you is what not to do: the factory reset in the settings menu is not a power cycle, it wipes your saved settings, and Hotpoint say so in the same sentence they describe it.

No engineer has read this page. Severity follows what the manufacturer publishes, and we would rather tell you that than let a byline imply a sign-off.

What we check instead

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
